Mastering Emotions with RULER
The RULER approach, developed by the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, is a comprehensive framework for teaching emotional intelligence. RULER stands for Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing, and Regulating emotions. These five skills are essential for fostering emotional awareness and regulation, which are critical components of social and emotional learning (SEL). The approach is evidence-based and has been implemented in various educational settings to enhance students’ emotional and academic outcomes.

At The Kintess School, the RULER approach is deeply integrated into the curriculum to promote emotional intelligence among students. The school employs key RULER tools such as the Charter, Mood Meter, Meta-Moment, and Blueprint to create a supportive and emotionally rich learning environment. The Charter helps establish a positive emotional climate by outlining shared norms and values. The Mood Meter enhances self-awareness by helping students identify and articulate their emotions. The Meta-Moment encourages thoughtful responses to emotional situations by connecting with one’s “best self.” The Blueprint guides students in navigating conflicts and developing empathy. By incorporating these tools, The Kintess School fosters a culture of emotional understanding and regulation, preparing students for success both academically and personally. (The Kintess School)
